Strata is a residential project located in Madrid, positioned directly opposite the remains of the Cerca de Felipe IV along Ronda de Segovia. This privileged setting, together with its visual and material relationship to the historic enclosure, establishes the conceptual starting point of the intervention.

From this premise, the project seeks to recover and highlight original elements of the dwelling, such as the existing family boiserie and the original parquet flooring. The material strategy reinforces the notion of stratification, favouring textured surfaces and layered finishes that evoke sedimentation, the passage of time, and the stony character of the historic wall. In this context, a new porcelain tile is introduced in the open-plan kitchen, enveloping the space and introducing a strong sense of horizontality that enhances the reading of superimposed layers.

At a functional level, the layout is updated to a more contemporary spatial narrative by opening the entrance and kitchen onto the living area, creating a single continuous space. The intervention also includes a comprehensive transformation of the two bathrooms, both in terms of surface finishes and spatial organisation, optimising usability and storage capacity. The bedrooms, by contrast, are minimally refurbished, allowing for a restrained intervention aligned with the project’s budget.

Strata is the renovation of what was once a family’s first home, now reinterpreted as a witness to shared time where memory, materiality, and domestic use overlap as layers within a single story.
